9.1 Azepur99® as a sustainable cosmetic active ingredient
When applied in the context of chemicals, the concept of sustainability could be formulated as the ability of a chemical material/product/service to deliver its function without exceeding environmental and ecological boundaries along its entire life cycle, while providing welfare and socio-economic benefits. The safety concept is transversal to all sustainability dimensions: environmental, social, and economic. It is related to the absence of unacceptable risk for humans and the environment, preferably ensured by the absence of intrinsic hazard properties of chemicals. Within the European Green Deal, the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) identified a number of interventions to reduce impacts on human health and the environment associated with chemicals, materials, products, and services commercialized or introduced in the EU market. The EU CSS action plan foresees the development of a framework to define Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) criteria for chemicals and materials that should contribute to achieving the aforementioned ambitions, beyond current regulatory compliance.
In particular, this plan is presenting the dimensions, aspects, and indicators that can be used to assess chemicals and materials and how criteria can be defined in order to identify those that are SSbD:
1.Safe and environmentally sustainable chemicals/materials. 2.Safe and environmentally sustainable chemical production processes. 3.Safe and environmentally sustainable raw materials and inputs. 4.Safe and environmentally sustainable when recycled or reused, as well as when treated as waste. 5.Chemicals designed to contribute to sustainability that are generating benefits at the system level where applied.
