Essential Guide azelaic acid

Applications / Hair-growth & regrowth

Both finasteride and dutasteride are pharmaceutical products and shall by no means be used in personal care and cosmetic products and medical devices.

Minoxidil Minoxidil was originally developed for the treatment of high blood pressure, but it was also observed that it affected hair growth. Contrary to finasteride and dutasteride minoxidil has no hormonal activity. However, the medication is not allowed in personal care and cosmetic preparations as well as in medical devices, mainly because it is a pharmaceutical product. A disadvantage of minoxidil is the fact that newly formed hairs frequently stay in the “vellus” phase, underpinning short and fine, soft and usually not pigmented hairs. On the other hand, Minoxidil is a medication that is used to treat hair loss and promote hair growth. It is a topical solution that is applied directly to the scalp. It is available in both a liquid and foam form. The drug works by increasing the blood flow to the scalp, which helps to stimulate hair growth. It also helps to prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle, which helps to increase the number of hairs that are in the growing phase. Additionally, it helps to reduce the amount of time that hairs spend in the resting phase, which helps to reduce the amount of hair loss.

Minoxidil has a number of side effects: acne, headache/migraine, heart palpitations and irregular heart beat and (unwanted) blood pressure lowering. Minoxidil shall not be used by lactating females. The mode of action of minoxidil is yet unknown.
