11.1. I NFORMATION ON TOXICOLOGICAL EFFECTS :
A CUTE T OXICITY :
read across from OCTANOIC ACID ( CAS 124-07-2) LD50 ORAL , RAT > 5000 mg/kg bw
OECD 401
read across from OCTANOIC ACID ( CAS 124-07-2) LC50 INHALATION , RAT > 0.1621 mg/L air
(published data)
read across from STEARIC ACID ( CAS 57-11-4) LD50 DERMAL , RABBIT > 2000 mg/kg bw
OECD 434
S KIN CORROSION / IRRITATION :
A ZELAIC ACID is not skin irritating at concentrations up to 50% in a guinea pig test according to OECD 406. The liquid analogue F ATTY ACIDS , C 8-10 (CAS 68937-75-7) is skin irritating in a rabbit test according to OECD 404 (degree of purity > 99.5%). Based on above results, A ZELAIC ACID is classified as skin irritant in concentrations above 50%. Rabbit study on the analogue: C10: 96.6 %; C12: 2.6 %; C8: 0.8 % shows corneal opacity and moderate conjunctivitis which do not subside within 72 h. Based on above results, A ZELAIC ACID is classified as eye irritant.
S ERIOUS EYE DAMAGE / IRRITATION :
R ESPIRATORY OR SKIN SENSITIZATION :
